All About Metal Grating – Types and Applications

Do you know what metal grating is? You don’t know anything about it? Are you sure? What do we call the floor of a pedestrian bridge? That’s metal grating. Let’s make it easy for you to understand it correctly; basically, a metal grating is a term used for a vast range of metal fabricated items. However, things like a metal drawer knob are also metal fabricated items and thus make the definition for metal grating vague. Therefore, to make it clear to you in a precise manner, we have concluded that metal grating means any metal fabricated to be used for flooring an opening or closing it. Now it must be clear to you what metal grating means, and thus we can move on to discussing its types for a better understanding of the term. Talking about types of metal grating, there are different types, but to properly classify them all, we would have to divide them into two types. First off, we can discuss the types of metal grating based on structures and then the types of metal grating on the basis of materials. Here they are:

Types of Metal Grating Based on Structures:

Expanded Metal Grating:

Expanded metal grating is a sheet of metal with a diamond-shaped pattern; this is achieved when a plain metal sheet is passed through a cutting machine which creates slits on it at regular intervals. The metal sheet with slits is then expanded to; as a result; the diamond-shaped pattern is obtained. Expanded metal sheets are sought after the most as they involve no waste in their manufacturing. This type of metal grating is also very cost-effective, one because it doesn’t include any debris, and two because the slit-making and expanding process are very reasonable in terms of money. These are usually used for steps, flooring, fencing, and security-related applications.

Bar Grating:

Bar grating is entirely different from expanded metal grating because of its structure and the way it is manufactured. Bar grating is manufactured by placing metal bars parallel to each other at regular intervals and then joining them by welding perpendicular metals bars with the parallel bars. Commonly, the bars are merged by welding, but they can be done in other ways, like close meshing, riveting, press locking, etc. Bar grating can be done by using various materials, but steel is the most common among them all. Besides, it would be cheaper to get wholesale steel bar grating than any other material. Bar grating is widely used for flooring in industries; apart from that. It makes fire escapes, bridges, and street drains.

Safety Grating:

Safety grating is the safest type of grating designed to be used specifically for walking spaces, and thus that’s where their name comes from. They have protrusions on them at regular intervals and are usually in a diamond shape; what these protrusions do is that they help in increasing the traction; as a result, the risk of slipping in safety grating is shallow. The grip that safety grating offers is far better than bar grating and expanded metal grating. These are commonly used to make walkways or any walking platform and stairs.

Types of Metal Grating Based on Materials:

Steel Grating:

Steel is the most popular grating metal among all and is used for making all the different types of metal grating structures. Steel is known for its durability and corrosion resistance, and for this reason, it makes the best metal grating. Most of the time, the metal grating is used in outdoor spaces, and rain can corrode other metals but not steel; hence steel grating is sought for its corrosion resistance. In steel, there are also two types of steel that are used the most for making metal grating one is carbon steel, and the other is stainless steel. Both the steels have their unique characteristics, which make the best metal grating when integrated into the metal grating. However, apart from using steel grating for walkways and bridges, you can also use it for power stations, grain silos, stair treads, refineries, chemical plants, drain gates, etc.

Aluminum Grating:

Aluminum grating is firm but not as strong as steel grating, but the reason behind its popularity is that it is very lightweight. Therefore, their aluminum grating is preferred over steel grating in places where weight is always considered. Its popularity is also associated with its aesthetic appearance; it appeals to the eyes. Thus, the areas that do not require the most robust metal grating use aluminum grating. Aluminum grating is commonly used for ceilings, curtain walls, and other decorative purposes.
